Named after Mjölnir, the hammer of Thor, Digital Mjolnir is VS19’s controlled process for securely sanitizing or physically destroying electronic media.

The appropriate method depends on the type and condition of the media, the sensitivity of the information, the client’s requirements, and whether the device will be reused or permanently disposed of.

Certification and Security​
We provide a certificate of sanitization for media that is logically sanitized and a certificate of physical destruction for media that is destroyed. When incineration is used, a certificate of incineration is provided. If required, optional video documentation of the incineration process can be provided for additional assurance.

The Digital Mjolnir Process
1. INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENT
Media is documented using available manufacturer, model, serial number, and asset information. We review the media type, condition, intended disposition, and applicable client requirements before selecting a method.
2. SECURE CHAIN OF CUSTODY
Media is transferred using documented intake procedures and secured for transport. Custody records help account for each item from collection through sanitization or destruction.
3. SANITIZATION OR PHYSICAL DESTRUCTION
The selected method may include logical sanitization, cryptographic erase when technically appropriate, or media-specific physical destruction.
Damaged media or devices that cannot be reliably sanitized may proceed directly to controlled physical destruction. Small embedded media, including NFC and RFID devices, are evaluated separately and handled using an appropriate electronic or physical method.
4. VERIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION
The completed process is reviewed and documented according to the engagement scope. Clients receive records describing the media, selected method, completion date, and final disposition. Depending on the method performed, documentation may include a serialized media inventory, chain-of-custody records, and a certificate of sanitization or physical destruction.

Controlled, Secure Operations
Logical sanitization is performed using controlled systems and processes designed to limit unauthorized access. All logical sanitization is performed using air-gapped equipment so that media undergoing sanitization is not connected to a production or internet-connected network.

​Physical destruction is performed under controlled conditions appropriate to the media and engagement. Media designated for destruction cannot be returned for reuse after the process is completed.
Standards-Aligned Media Sanitization
The Digital Mjolnir process is informed by current media-sanitization guidance, including NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2. Methods are selected according to the media type, condition, information sensitivity, intended disposition, and client requirements.

Media sanitization and destruction can support an organization’s obligations under security, privacy, contractual, and regulatory programs. However, no single destruction service establishes an organization’s overall compliance with HIPAA, PCI DSS, CMMC, GDPR, CCPA, or another framework.
